Oaks Estate trail to be upgraded

WORKS to the heritage walk along the river corridor at Oaks Estate will begin this week to formalise the trail. unnamed-4

The heritage walk passes by the junction of the Molonglo and Queanbeyan rivers telling stories along the way about how the merging of the rivers shaped the land, as well as its pastoral uses and its European and Aboriginal history.

Minister for Transport and City Services, Meegan Fitzharris says the ACT government has allocated $230,000 for the design and construction to improve the trail.

“A formal trail for Oaks Estate residents will improve safety and access as well as enhance recreational value by providing interpretative signs and upgraded seating.

“Improvements to the trail will include minor upgrades to the existing entrance at William Street and stone steps leading to the Queanbeyan River. Timber steps will also be provided for better access along the return trail, to the Osage Orange trees.

“New seating, picnic settings and signage will also be installed to provide directional advice and to tell visitors more about the environmental and historical significance of the river corridor.”

The upgrade is expected to be completed in December this year.
