Oranjefeest Canberra celebrates 400 years of Dutch contact with Australia

Oranjefeest Canberra 2015

CANBERRANS can celebrate all things Dutch at the 2nd ‘Oranjefeest Canberra’ King’s Day festival with Dutch food, music, anniversary walk, games, flea market and more on 30 April.

The annual celebration and national holiday in the Netherlands marks the traditional birthday of the Dutch monarch (currently King Willem-Alexander).

“An occasion for everyone – Dutch or not – this free community event has something for all ages,” organiser Hans Van de Zandt said.

“As 2016 marks the 400th anniversary of the first Dutch contact with Australia, a ‘Dirk Hartog 2016 Explorer’s Walk and Ride’ around Lake Burley Griffin will be held to mark the occasion. Walkers will leave the Albert Hall and Riders from Nara Park around 10am. Participants are invited to wear orange, and will receive a complimentary memento donated by the Embassy of the Netherlands in Australia.

“We’re thrilled to be hosting Oranjefeest again this year, after such a successful event last year. We want this year to be bigger and better than ever.

“A foodies delight – there will be traditional Dutch food and drink available for sale including poffertjes (small pancakes), oliebollen (Dutch doghnuts), erwtensoup (pea soup), haring (raw herring), kroketten (croquettes), stroopwafels (caramel waffles), Indonesian nasi gorang and chicken sate. The all-day bar will sell Dutch Oranjebitter liqueur, Bavaria beer, Jans liqueur and advocaat.

“Dutch Treat’ will provide musical entertainment, while Canberra’s historic Draaiorgel (carousel organ) from the Civic merry-go-round will be playing throughout the day

“The festivities will resume in the evening with a four-course royal red-blue-white King’s dinner soiree prepared by Dutch Master Chef Ron den Hartog, with free aperitifs, music and more.
