SIMON Corbell sayd ACT Policing will focus on preventing family and alcohol-fuelled violence to help keep our community safe, under a new purchase agreement.

Simon signed the 2016-17 Purchase Agreement together with the Australian Federal Police Commissioner, Andrew Colvin APM OAM, and Chief Police Officer for the ACT, Rudi Lammers APM.

“The ACT Government and community set high expectations for its police service,” Simon said.

“This Purchase Agreement formalises these expectations for continuing the provision of a professional and transparent policing service, and identifies key focus areas for the next 12 months.

“This year, I have directed ACT Policing to focus on the reduction and prevention of alcohol-fuelled and family and domestic violence.

“This builds on the ACT Government’s commitment to effect change and break the cycle of family and domestic violence.

“Under the Purchase Agreement, the Territory’s police officers who respond to family and domestic violence will receive appropriate training and tools to best assist victims.

“To counter and prevent instances of alcohol-fuelled violence, police will maintain a strong presence in Canberra’s night entertainment precincts to enforce liquor laws.

“Improving safety for the ACT’s vulnerable road users will be also emphasised this year, with police tasked to combat anti-social and dangerous driving behaviours, including impaired driving and speeding.

“I have further provided directions in the Purchase Agreement, focusing on restorative justice, particularly for Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander young people who are eligible to take part in the program.

“These directions ensure ACT Policing operates in a way that promotes collaboration, and demonstrates accountability and responsiveness.

“Over the past five years, ACT Policing has performed very well, achieving a high percentage in its performance targets, and I congratulate the Chief Police Officer and his officers for their hard work in reducing crime in our community.”

Chief Police Officer for the ACT Rudi Lammers expressed his pride and gratitude towards ACT Policing members, who have sustained a high standard of performance.

“It is the dedication and passion of individuals, which has allowed us to consistently perform strongly against our key performance indicators. I’m grateful to the Canberra residents who have supported our efforts to solve and prevent crime by reporting to Crime Stoppers and police, engaging with our social media channels and refusing to tolerate violence in our community,” Assistant Commissioner Lammers said.
