Queanbeyan flooding no threat to residents

THE Queanbeyan unit of the SES says the current Bureau of Meteorology flood warning for the Queanbeyan and Molonglo Rivers has been reissued with a revised peak. With up to 260 millimetres of rain received in the last 48 hours. The Queanbeyan River is expected to peak at 5.2m at around 15:00 this afternoon in the Queanbeyan CBD. They are expecting Oaks Estate crossing on the Molonglo to peak at 6.1m at 15:00.

Incident Controller Zakia Patel says there is still no cause for concern for Queanbeyan residents.

“We have been in contact regularly with local businesses that were potentially to be effected,” Zakia said.

“Queanbeyan Riverside Caravan Park moved caravans from low lying areas to higher ground, they will not be evacuating. There is no evacuations planned for today. Rain has now ceased with no further significant rainfall forecast at this point.

“If you require the assistance of the SES you can call us on 132 500”.

“Queanbeyan has teams of specialist swift water rescue technicians on site as well as storm teams working through the last of the 46 requests for assistance that we have received. We currently have seven outstanding requests and expect to be completed by 18:00 this evening.”

Public Information Officer Brent Hunter advised residents to “monitor our social media platforms for updates across the day, we are doing live video streams across the day”.
