Queer Screen – ‘between humour and tragedy’

THE QUEER Screen Film Festival is coming  to Canberra at last.

Running at Arc Cinema on October 1 only, for the first time this year, showing two award-winning films.

“Southwest of Salem: The Story of the San Antonio Four” was directed by Deborah Esquenazi and won Outstanding Documentary Feature Award at Frameline 2016. This film is the true crime story of four Latina lesbian women who were wrongly convicted of the gang rape of two young girls. The documentary sees the tides turn as we follow the riveting and emotional journey of these women as they attempt to clear their names. “Other People,” directed by Chris Kelly, is a small-town tragicomedy revolving around a gay son, David (Jesse Plemons, ‘Breaking Bad’ and ‘Fargo’) who returns home to take care of his dying mother. Molly Shannon plays his mum – alternating between humour and tragedy and sarcasm and warm smiles. It’s billed as is a heart-warming, entertaining and uplifting story of familial love and resilience and screened on opening night at the 2016 Sundance Film Festival, and closed ‘Outfest 2016’.
