ACT Policing has today publically released the Review of Police Pursuits Conducted by ACT Policing in the Australian Capital Territory.

In April 2014 the Chief Police Officer for the ACT Rudi Lammers initiated a review of police pursuits conducted by ACT Policing in the ACT.

The review was completed in September 2015 and provided to Cabinet to inform the drafting of legislation to underpin the introduction by ACT Policing of a limited pursuit policy that came into effect on 18 March 2016. This policy limits the occasions where police may pursue drivers to situations where it is necessary to prevent a serious risk to public health or safety, or where an offence involving serious injury or death has been committed or is about to be committed.

At the commencement of the pursuits review, the Chief Police Officer for the ACT Rudi Lammers undertook to release the review publically once complete.

Chief Police Officer for the ACT Rudi Lammers said the review has been published to provide transparency.

“This review provided valuable information to ACT Policing and the ACT Government and played a major role in informing the legislative reforms which led to the limited pursuit policy adopted earlier this year,” Assistant Commissioner Lammers said.

“The duty of a police officer is to protect and support the community. I commissioned this report in April 2014 in order to identify the best possible pursuit practices to serve and protect the people of Canberra. I believe that purpose has been fulfilled with the introduction of a new police pursuits policy that will save lives.”

The review is now available on the ACT Policing website at police.act.gov.au The published document contains minor redactions in order to prevent the disclosure of police methodologies, particularly regarding the trigger points for commencing a pursuit, other than that, it has been published in its entirety.
