See innovative houses in O’Connor

LOCAL community group SEE-Change, in collaboration with ACTSmart and the ACT Chapter of the Australian Institute of Architects, are again having regular sustainable house tours throughout 2016.

SEE-Change Executive Officer Jodie Pipkorn said the first home in this tour will be open on Sunday February 27 between 10am-12pm in O’Connor.

“This tour will showcase a previously toured home of a shipping container converted into a lovely comfortable 20sqm of living/dining/eating and sleeping space, along with an aquaponics system and an organic vegetable garden,” Jodie said.

“On the same tour you can view a ’90-day’ house (, which was built by the owner a few hours a day and took less than 90 days to finish. It also cost less than $10,000 to build.

“For over 6 years SEE-Change has been running ‘over the back fence’ tours, where members open their homes and gardens to the public to share their lessons learnt and the actions they have taken to reduce their impact on the environment and save money.

“We are particularly excited about the homes being shown this year, as they show a range of different solutions, from small simple homes like this first tour through to a very efficient ‘Passivhaus’ that will be open in June.

“All of these house tours will inspire and inform renovators, home owners and home buyers about actions that can be taken in and around the home to make them more comfortable to live in, particularly when the temperatures outside are really hot or really cold.”
