THE team at Callaghans Business Services is preparing for the second charity golf day on February 26 to raise funds for Bowel Cancer Australia in the name of their former partner.

The Michael Williams Memorial Trust is in honour of Callaghans’ financial planning partner, who died from bowel cancer in October, 2014, aged 32.

Michael Williams… memory honoured in a golf day.
“We decided to choose a golf day to raise money for Bowel Cancer Australia through the Michael Williams Memorial Trust as Michael was a keen golfer who loved nothing more than a day out of the office networking with his industry peers,” says Callaghans’ partner, Justin Corkran.

“We were blown away with the success of last year’s golf day. Not only was it a beautiful day but we managed to raise $23,000 and had many comments that it was the best golf day many of the players have ever been involved in.”

Michael grew up in Albury and moved to Canberra once he had finished his degree in financial planning. Justin says that Michael worked at Callaghans for five years and built many strong relationships with his clients and was very well respected in the industry.

“We really hope that we can also raise awareness of bowel cancer. If holding a golf day each year means that just a handful more people get screened much earlier in their life, such as in their 20s and 30s rather than waiting till they’re in their 50s, then it may save lives and prove to be a bigger success than we may ever realise,” says Justin.

Bowel cancer is the second biggest cancer killer in Australia, with one in 12 people developing it in their lifetime.

The risk of bowel cancer increases with age, with people over the age of 50 being at the highest risk, but it can strike at any time as was the case with Michael.

Currently fewer than 40 per cent of cases are being detected early and one of Bowel Cancer Australia’s main campaigns is to raise awareness for early detection which gives treatment a 90 per cent success rate.
