Shane wants the public’s view on civil surveillance

SHANE Rattenbury has called for public input on a review of civil surveillance in the ACT.

“Given the increasing use of technologies such as drones, wearable devices and smart phones, it is timely for the Government to undertake this review to determine if there is a need to amend the Territory’s privacy laws,” Shane said.

“The Government initially commissioned an independent review into the regulation of civil surveillance in the ACT. The Review makes ten recommendations for improving the regulation of surveillance in the ACT, including generally prohibiting surveillance by any device unless for the purpose of protecting an individual’s lawful interests, or for a purpose in the public interest.

“The Government now wants to gauge the views of the community so that we can get the right balance in our law to encourage the responsible use of new and emerging technologies that support our digital city, while appropriately protecting personal privacy.

“Negotiating community expectations about privacy is a big issue in an increasingly connected world.

“There are many benefits to consumers and businesses of these new technologies, but we need to ensure there is an appropriate balance of privacy for individuals in their homes and other private settings.”

The Government is considering the recommendations from the review and will also consider community feedback. Consultation is open until 1 November.

The full review report and details on the consultation and how to make submissions are available at justice.act.gov.au
