BRENDAN Smyth says that amidst reports that Andrew Barr and his government are still entertaining a proposal to allow poker machines in the casino, the Chief Minister needs to recognise that he has a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with clubs supporting the community gaming model.

“The Canberra Liberals support the community club gaming model and recognise that local clubs support the community with jobs, facilities, safe local meeting places and numerous sporting and recreational facilities. As locals, they are also in a better position to manage the issues surrounding problem gambling,” Brendan said.

“By continuing to pursue poker machines in the casino, Andrew Barr is turning his back on the MOU his government signed with Clubs ACT in 2012, which states:

“The ACT Government will continue to support the community based gaming model”

“As the lone Green keeping Andrew Barr in power, Shane Rattenbury also needs explain where he stands on allowing poker machines in the casino.

“The community club gaming model works well in Canberra and Andrew Barr should support its merit instead of turning his back on the community,” Mr Smyth concluded.
