UC goes completely smoke free

VICE-CHANCELLOR Deep Saini says the University of Canberra has gone completely tobacco-free.

“The University Council recently approved the introduction of a tobacco-free campus policy, which takes effect from today, 4 October, banning all tobacco products on the University’s Bruce campus,” Seep said.

“The University of Canberra has been tobacco-free since 2010 with the provision of two designated smoking areas. It has now taken its commitment a step further and banned tobacco on its grounds altogether. These measures apply to all forms of tobacco products and e-cigarettes.

“The policy was introduced after extensive consultation with the University community last year, and its introduction has been, and will be, supported by a range of education and awareness initiatives. These include smoke-free ambassadors, information sessions and support from the University’s Medical and Counselling team, special events during student orientation period, as well as a webpage, which provides relevant information for smokers and non-smokers.

The initiative delivers on the University’s commitment to improve the health and wellbeing of staff, students and visitors.

“This new policy aims to make the University of Canberra a healthier place to work and study.

“We are aware that the transition into a completely tobacco-free University will be a gradual process and will require patience and respect, but it is an important step towards supporting a healthier environment that enhances the wellbeing of everyone sharing our campus.

“In the meantime, the University will continue raising awareness about the health-related benefits of giving up smoking and providing support to those who want to quit.”
