Last weekend “Sculpture in the Paddock” opened at Cooma Cottage where, as wel as the outdoor show, there is also an exhibition inside the house that catalogues a recent arts project in local schools as well as exhibition of work from Reconciliation NSW.

Yass was also abuzz with influx of people who annually gather in Yass for The Turning Wave Festival, which celebrates all things Irish and as well at Tootsie Fine Art & Design, a Steam Punk workshop led by artist Freya Jobbin.

And this Sunday, September 25, Tootsie will host the “Best Foot Forward” exhibition and auction, intended to help to build a legacy for the late arts leader Kim Nelson.

Nelson founded YASSarts 20 years ago to promote the art and culture of the Yass Valley, and was instrumental in developing Yass as a flourishing arts community. His sudden passing on August 12 last year has left a huge hole in the arts community. “It has been a struggle without the guidance of his physical presence, commitment, passion and energy, but we are trying,” says YASSarts member Anne Hind.

Nelson’s love for wearing Dunlop Volleys was well known in the arts community.

YASSarts have secured in-kind sponsorship from Volley Australia, who have provided more than 30 pairs of Dunlop Volleys for this event. Yass artists have been busy creating artworks, wearable or sculptural, out of the Volleys to be auctioned as a fundraiser to build Nelson’s legacy, possibly ensuring the labyrinth (created in memory of Kim for last years’ Sculpture in the Paddock) becomes a permanent art installation at Cooma Cottage.

There is also planned to be a yearly cash award for promising young artists at the high school

the bidding for a unique Kim Nelson-inspired, Dunlop Volley art work will be opened by local identity Katrina Hodgkinson, there are also a couple of special presentations which will occur on this occasion.

“Best Foot Forward Auction – building Kim’s legacy,” Tootsie fine art and design, 289 Comur Street, Yass. The auction will commence at 4pm on Sunday, September 25 but Tootsie will trade as normal from 9.30am – 3.30pm and there will be live music throughout the day. All welcome.
