Arts / Monica carries off CAPO prize in style

THE news is out… photography and video artist Monica Styles has won the CAPO Emerging Artists’ Prize for 2017.

Monica Styles, “Disposable Woman 3”, 2017, large format digital print.
Styles’ winning work, “Disposable Woman 3”, 2017, can be seen in the Belconnen Arts Centre as part of the Capital Arts Patrons Organisation’s Emerging Artists’ Prize exhibition, curated by CAPO curatorial internship awardees, ANU Art History graduates Clare Fealy and Emily Stewart.

The judges, Gordon Bull and Anne Brennan, commented: “This is an outstanding exhibition. All of the artists exhibiting would be worthy recipients of the prize. It was difficult to choose one. We have settled on Monica Styles. Congratulations to all of the artists, and the curators”.

In the exhibition, “FORM”, Fealy and Stewart explores how the eight exhibiting artists, Styles, Abbey Jamieson, Chelsea Agno, John Evans, Mei Wilkinson, Catherine Newton, Rose-Mary Faulkner and Amy Campbell, have physically created their works, what has inspired them and how their practice has potentially challenged conventional art forms.

The Emerging Artists’ Prize exhibition, Belconnen Arts Centre, Tuesday to Sunday, 10am-4pm until June 25. Works are for sale by application to the arts centre.
