Dr Vaughan, the former long-time director of the National Gallery of Victoria and before that, private secretary to the vice-chancellor of Oxford University and director of the British Museum Development Trust, is a notable scholar in the area of neoclassical art.

His time at the NGA has seen him handle the controversial issue of Indian sculptures with doubtful provenance, broaden the public’s access to the gallery’s collection giving prominence to the Australian collections, and continue the regular program of international exhibitions, partnerships and acquisitions.

He has also initiated new ways to cultivate private and public support for the NGA.

Dr Vaughan’s extended term will end in October next year but an international search for a new director will commence soon under the management of global executive search firm, Korn Ferry.
