Prison minister revels in contraband coup

IN the last year more than 700 items have been seized by corrections officers at the Alexander Maconochie Centre (AMC), which Minister for Corrections Shane Rattenbury says has been a significant challenge.

The 740 items seized in 2016-17 included 33 mobile telephones, 44 mobile accessories such as chargers, SIM cards and SD cards, 221 drug-related items, such as 59 syringes and 74 smoking implements, as well as 41 USBs.

During this time corrections officers conducted 2533 area searches and 4655 individual location searches to minimise the amount of contraband entering and within the AMC.

More than 700 items were seized by corrections officers during 2016-17 which is evidence of our vigilance and effectiveness of our methods to detect prohibited items.

“Thanks to the hard work of our correction officers, large amounts of contraband is detected and seized at the AMC,” Mr Rattenbury says.

“ACT Corrective Services has a renewed focus on security and intelligence-led operations, which will help to continue to prevent and reduce the introduction of contraband into the AMC. Part of this renewed focus is as a result of the recent security review.”
