A TOWNHOUSE in Belconnen has been almost completely destroyed by fire late this afternoon.

ACT Fire & Rescue was alerted to the fire on Condell Street at 3:39pm and responded with three pumpers, breathing apparatus support, a hazmat team and a commander.

The two occupants of the townhouse, a man and a woman both in their 40s, were treated at the scene for minor smoke inhalation.

Hazmat crews are now conducting atmosphere testing inside the townhouses on each side of the damaged building to ensure they are safe for occupancy.

The damage bill is estimated to be about $300,000.
