IN April this year Andrew Plant travelled to the Solomon Islands to capture images in support of the “Markets for Change Project”, documenting the daily challenges faced by market vendors from farm plot to market stall and their enthusiasm in developing a cohesive voice. Now Belconnen Community Gallery’s “Springboard Series” will be showing the results in “Voices of the Market”, at Belconnen Community Centre, Swanson Court, Belconnen, until August 10. KYEEMA Gallery at Hall is hosting an exhibition and sale of works by Alice Springs artist, Sarah Brown and Indigenous artists of Central Australia. Brown is a well-known artist based in Alice Springs but her day job is running the Western Desert Dialysis Program, known as the “Purple House”. All proceeds from this exhibition go to support Purple House dialysis centres in remote communities. “ART Monthly” is holding a silent fundraising auction of nine “Art Monthly” framed commissioned prints, such as works by Vernon Ah Kee, G. W. Bot, eX de Medici and Mike Parr. BEAVER Galleries has two new exhibitions opening this week. One features Sophia Szilagyi, who is known for her works on paper, capturing a sense of wonder, fear, beauty and, sometimes danger, existing in both nature and imagination. The other will show madeleine Winch’s works as she renders the cyclical nature of people’s lives in “Mysteries of the heart: paintings & works on paper”. Both exhibitions open at Beaver Galleries, 81 Denison Street, Deakin, 6pm, July 26. Both will run until August 12, from Tuesday to Friday and Saturday and Sunday. 

PHOTOACCESS has three new shows celebrating female Canberra-based artists: “#welcomenotwelcome” by Hilary Wardhaugh; “Journey Reluctantly Taken” by Marzena Wasikowska; and “Sprite by Grace Blake”. NANCY Sever Gallery presenting “Reason and Intuition”, an exhibition of recent work by Andrew Christofides, one of Australia’s leading abstract artists. For the past 45 years his art practice has explored the various visual languages of abstraction, and in particular those of geometric and formal abstraction. THE Photography Room Gallery is presenting “Everyday Nature” by Lily Platts, who splits her time between Canberra and her home in Bombala on the Monaro in southern NSW. Her current works focus on the juxtaposition between the picturesque environment that surrounds Canberra in direct proximity to the mundane and clinical scenes of urban living.
