Arts in the City / Swing kings pay tribute to Ella and Louis

Count Basie Orchestra… Canberra Theatre, July 31.

THE Legendary Count Basie Orchestra will be in town to present a tribute to Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong, featuring guest vocalist Carmen Bradford. Billed as the living embodiment of swing, the 18-piece orchestra is directed by veteran trumpeter Scotty Barnhart and features a peerless array of instrumentalists such as trombonist Clarence Banks, hired by Basie himself, as well as former members of Stan Kenton’s, Benny Goodman’s and Lionel Hampton’s ensembles. At the Canberra Theatre, July 31.

WINNING works in the 2018 Matt Withers Australian Music Composition Competition will be performed by classical guitarist and founder of the award Matt Withers and the Acacia Quartet. At the Margaret Whitlam Pavilion, National Arboretum, 3pm and 6pm, August 18. Bookings to mattwithers.com.au

Anton Wurzer… Wesley Uniting Church, July 25.

CANBERRA piano accordionist, Anton Wurzer has been known to perform orchestral work, live theatre, classical, continental, Latin American, rhythm ’n blues, pop, rock, country and jazz. He’ll play a selection of his original compositions at Wesley Uniting Church, 12.40pm-1.20pm, Wednesday, July 25.

IN April, Andrew Plant travelled to the Solomon Islands to capture images in support of the Markets for Change Project, documenting the daily challenges faced by market vendors from farm plot to market stall and their enthusiasm in developing a cohesive voice. Now the Belconnen Community Gallery’s “Springboard Series” will show the results in “Voices of the Market” at Swanson Court until August 10. Opening, 5.30pm-7.30pm, on Wednesday, July 25. All welcome.

“K-WIND Soul Beat” is a Korean heritage show to be performed by Kim Juhong’s Ensemble Noreum Machi (traditional Korean music), Gorilla Crew (B-Boying and hip-hop to popping dance) and Mira Dance Company (traditional Korean dance). Pianist Joyce Yang… Llewellyn Hall, July 26.

GRAMMY-nominated pianist Joyce Yang will be at Llewellyn Hall on Thursday, July 26, with Musica Viva performing Rachmaninov, Janá?ek and Liszt and a world-premiere composition by young Sydney composer, Elizabeth Younan. Bookings to musicaviva.com.au
