Clowning at Garema Place
“CIRCUS Winter Wonderland” is a 45-minute show packed with acrobatics, circus stunts and the kind of silliness that’s perfect for children aged three and up. CANBERRA Community Chorale will perform a concert of British sacred music across the ages, from Byrd to Britten, chosen by musical director AJ America to ensure a variety of styles and eras. Kim Carpenter’s ‘Little Beauty’
KIM Carpenter’s Theatre of Image is reprising its 2010 production of “Little Beauty”, a show for children and families originally commissioned by the National Portrait Gallery. “TOURMALINE Out Loud” (adapted from Randolph Stow’s famous novel) will join HG Wells’ “The War of the Worlds” in a staged “radio theatre” production. The Street Theatre, July 7-8. CHRIS Stone and Holly Downes once again head a team of leading professional string players who play everything from pop to punk, gypsy to jazz, funk to folk, klezmer to classical in “Wild Strings 2018”, an adventurous program for young string players. The program is open to 10-year-olds up to 21-year-olds who have at least three years-experience playing violin, viola, cello and double bass. Canberra Girls Grammar School, July 9–13. Mikelangelo as the Balkan Elvis
CANBERRA legend Mikelangelo has a new show, partly a rock ‘n’ roll musical, that follows the exploits of Johnny Presley, “The Balkan Elvis”, as he searches for love, fame and fortune behind the Iron Curtain. The show, which is, billed as “uproarious, uplifting and dead sexy”, will feature local musos such as Ben Marston, Dave Abkiewicz, Tom Manley and Mark Levers. At The Playhouse, 8pm, July 5. “GNOMES and Gardens”, directed by Nina Stevenson for Pied Piper Productions, is a play about the environment, which is suitable for the whole family. It’s at St Paul’s Anglican Church Hall, Manuka, 6pm, July 7; 11am and 2pm, July 10; 2pm, July 11; 11am and 2pm, July 12; and 6pm, July 13. Cash at the door, no reservations.

THE National Film and Sound Archive’s Vinyl Lounge is hosting a “Record Fair”, with a broad selection of contemporary recorded music provided by local music aficionados. Regulars and newcomers can also enjoy the monthly session of the Vinyl Lounge, NFSA, 5.30-7.30pm, Friday July 6. Food and drinks are available from the NFSA’s new café, Biginelli Espresso, but the event entry is free.
