Bystander bitten after chasing car thief

A BYSTANDER has been bitten by a man after chasing him during a police chase in Fyshwick. 

The man, 47, allegedly took a car key from a business in Mitchell on Thursday, July 19, before returning that night to steal the car.

Police are also allege the man stole cash and items from a Fyshwick business on Friday.

Then, on Saturday, the stolen vehicle was seen parked outside another Fyshwick business by a member of the public.

Police were called, and when they arrived they chased the offender, who ran through the business’s garage and into an office. As police were trying to gain entry to the office, the offender smashed a window and attempted to escape.

Several bystanders and police chased the man. One of the bystanders caught up with the man first, and that bystander was bitten by the offender as police were approaching.

The man has been charged with 10 offences including two counts of possessing a prohibited substance, taking a motor vehicle without consent, unlicensed driving, assault occasioning actual bodily harm, property damage and burglary.

He will appear in the ACT Magistrates Court this morning.
