Dr Rick Williams will talk about the impressions stamped on coins from Southern Italy in the 6th and 5th centuries BC and how their minting relates to Australia’s first coins – the holey dollar and dumps made in New South Wales in 1813.
Dr Williams will be asking how they compare and if people can draw links between the methods used to make them?
He gained his PhD from Monash University in 1983 and has since written publications focusing on experiments in manufacturing and striking coins from antiquity. He has run educational parliamentary programs in Parliament House, managed Cooma Cottage in Yass for the National Trust of NSW, taught in primary schools and is currently a gallery host at the National Archives of Australia.
