“THINGS of Yarn & Wood” features woven vessels crafted by Wiradjuri woman Angela Piscotta and wooden works by Wiradjuri/Yorta Yorta woman Bertha (Babs) Firebrace. It’ll be on show at Strathnairn Arts Homestead Gallery, 90 Stockdill Drive, Holt, February 14 to March 3. Official opening by Ngunnawal elder Caroline Hughes, 4pm, Saturday, February 16. ANU School of Art & Design staffers Peter Alwast, who is the head of “Painting Workshop”, and Jaqueline Bradley, who is a lecturer in sculpture,  battle it out to prove which medium is better in the “Great O-Week Debate”, at Canberra Museum and Gallery, 1pm-2pm, Thursday, February 14. “Looking to Gulaga” by Annie Franklin

GALLERY Bodalla’s next exhibition features Annie Franklin’s paintings celebrating the nuances of colour, light and seasonal changes in the environment. She is joined by Bill Insch’s landscapes, wildlife paintings and ceramics and paintings by south coast Aboriginal artist Cheryl Davison. Gallery Bodalla, heritage post office building, Princes Highway, Bodalla, 10.30am to 4pm,Thursday to Sunday, February 14 to March 24. Everyone is welcome to drinks with the artists at 3pm, Saturday, February 16, with music by guitarist John Hoorweg.

“MAGIC Happens – the story of Painting with Parkinsons”, is a new book by artist and art therapist, which will be launched at Muse Cafe, East Hotel, Kingston, 4pm this Saturday,  February 16. Guest Speakers will be by Canberra identity Alex Sloan and neurologist Prof Simon Hawke from the University of Sydney and Consultant Neurologist.

MIKELANGELO, joined by siren Anushka, instrumentalist Happy Axe/Emma Kelly and Aussie-US sensation Wendy Rule, plan to transport the audiences into the world of the Pre-Raphaelites in the “Love & Desire: Valentine’s Dinner and Concert”, at Gandel Hall, 6pm–10.30pm, Friday, February 15. A work by Solomon Grainger

CANBERRA artist, Solomon Grainger, is moving to Melbourne to study painting at university, but not before presenting a deeply personal solo exhibition titled “Collector” at The Front Gallery in Wattle Street, Lyneham. Opening 6pm, this Wednesday, February 13, all welcome.

IN “Postcards from the Sky” 10 artists and writers reflect on the omnipresent and all-seeing sky, reimagining stories behind constellations and other sky phenomena. Belconnen Arts Centre until March 17.

“THE man in the live oak and other stories” is a selection of mixed media artworks by Julie Bradley, hanging at Helen Stephens Gallery, 39 Murray Street, Collector, until March 17.

“BLAZE” is an annual exhibition of emerging artists from the ACT region and surrounds who are noted for their fresh, irreverent and unusual approach to art-making. Dean Cross, Skye Jamieson, Alex Lundy, Shags and Joshua Sleeman-Taylor are showing drawing, painting, sculpture, installation and printmaking in “Blaze Thirteen” at Canberra Contemporary Art Space, Gorman Arts Centre, 55 Ainslie Avenue, Braddon. Opening 6pm, Friday, February 15, all welcome. It then continues 11am-5pm, Tuesday to Saturday, until April 13.

MEANTIME at Canberra Contemporary Art Space Brazilian artist Christus Nóbrega’s “In the Footsteps of Priscilla” continues until April 17. At Furneaux Street, Manuka.

PHOTOACCESS has three new solo exhibitions: “Semiotics Club”, an exploration of the aesthetics of “queerness” and punk culture by Angus McGrath; “Seen & Heard”, large format portraits of women, trans, non-binary and gender diverse creative people, by Mikhaila Jurkiewicz;  and “Boreal”, still and moving images from sub-arctic Dawson City, north-eastern Canada, by Tessa Rex. Opening in in the PhotoAccess Huw Davies Gallery, 6pm, Thursday, February 14. All welcome, the show runs until March 16.
