THE new aMBUSH Gallery opens to the public from this week in the ANU’s Kambri precinct with a big indigenous exhibition. Welcome to Country by Ngunawal elder Wally Bell at Level 2, Cultural Centre (ANU Building 153) ANU, 6.30pm, Thursday, May 23. All welcome. The show runs to June 3.

TUGGERANONG Arts Centre and ACT Corrective services are celebrating National Reconciliation Week with “Reconciliation from Inside”, an exhibition of 40 art works by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander detainees from the Alexander Maconochie Centre. Since 2009, detainees have been encouraged to engage in art classes through education and training provider for both educational and therapeutic purposes. Opening 3pm, Friday, May 24. All welcome. Continues until June 1.

“FROM My Mother unto Me” is curated by Erin Vink, an Ngemba woman with Anglo-Australian/Dutch heritage. It features the work of six female first nation artists from various parts of Australia including Kayannie Denigan (Luritja), Leah Brideson (Kamilaroi), Beverly Smith (Muruwari), Cassie Leatham (Taungurung/Wurundjeri), Nadine Lee (Larrakia) and Rebecca Ray (Meriam Mir). Opening at ANCA Gallery, 1 Rosevear Place, Dickson, 6pm, Wednesday, May 22, with Welcome to Country by Jude Barlow (Ngunnawal). Artist talks and dot painting workshop, 1pm-3pm, Saturday, May 25. The exhibition continue until June 9.

M16 Artspace is launching five new exhibitions: Canberra artist Rachel Head’s “Endangered Species”; “Excusez-Moi?” by Tom Buckland and Belle Palmer; “Same Time, Same Place” by the Artists Society of Canberra; Ella Whateley in Chutespace; and Nyx Mathews’ installation in “Pegboard”. All opening at 21 Blaxland Crescent Griffith, 6pm, this Thursday, May 23. The shows continue until June 9.

 

“REFLECTIONS” is an exhibition by Aeode portraying the inner landscape of both artist and subject. These works are an intuitive translation of personal experience. Canberra Contemporary Art Space, 19 Furneaux Street, Manuka, until May 26, 11am-5pm, Friday to Sunday. 

“Glass Glyphs – Psalms” by G.W.Bot, 2018, kiln formed and engraved glass

G.W. BOT, printmaker, painter, sculptor and graphic artist, made works at Canberra Glassworks during her 2018 residency where she explored the ideas of language, symbols and materials. She now exhibits with glass artist Giles Ryder, who has created a site specific installation for the Smokestack. Canberra Glassworks, 11 Wentworth Avenue, Kingston, May 23 to June 23, opening 6pm, Wednesday, May 22.

THE Belconnen Community Gallery “RESPECT” series presents “Yilga”, meaning “Leap” in Darug Language. It’s a collaborative exhibition of paintings, dance and song with Darug artist Emma Laverty, and the Tiny Tumblers dance club, and DancEdge groups in celebration of Reconciliation Week. Belconnen Community Gallery, Belconnen Community Centre, Swanson Court, Belconnen, May 21 to June 7, 9am-5pm, Monday to Friday, opening celebration 5.30pm, Thursday, May 30.
