LYONS Scout Hall is about to open up this weekend as “South Side”, a regular communal hub of dance and live performance.

South side founder Michael Smith

Intended as a place where Canberrans can have a dance and enjoy live performance on stage, it will run on the third Sunday of each month, starting this Sunday, February 17.

Non-alcoholic drinks and tea and coffee will be available and for this first event, and people are able to bring their own drinks. A third of the $10 door charge will support the homeless in Canberra.

“There’s a big dance floor, some great music and talented live acts on the stage,” says founder and former operatic tenor, Michael Smith.

“It’s a chance to have a dance, have a great time without it being a late night. For performers it’s a great chance to try out stuff on the stage.”

There will be three 10-minute live performances at 5.30pm, 6.30pm and 7.30pm, interspersed with ’80s, ’90s and “now” dance music for all. South Side is also available for functions, parties and events.

This Sunday, classical guitarist Ben Grace will perform Australian composer Philip Houghton’s “Ophelia, a haunted sonata”, Impro ACT stand-up comedian Chris McGrane will present “I sold my soul on e-bay” and pianist Giselle Roberts will play Brahms.

Would-be performers should contact 0402 598948, michaelsmithcomms@gmail.com or facebook.com/southsidecanberra
