Chris Ryan wins Sydney comedy accolade

Chris Ryan in action

CANBERRA comedian Chris Ryan has won the Best Newcomer Award at this year’s Sydney Comedy Festival.

The 45-year-old mother of two performed her first RAW Comedy set at Tilley’s in Lyneham seven years ago and has since run two regular comedy rooms in Canberra – Beyond Comedy at Beyond Q Bookshop in Weston Creek and Club Sandwich Comedy at Tuggeranong Arts Centre, also playing solo shows at the Canberra Comedy Festival in 2018 and  2019.

Ryan took the second show, “Bogus”, to Sydney and was selected as part of the Festival’s “Fresh” Program, highlighting up-and-coming Australian comedians.

“Canberra has a strong comedy scene that is largely unknown locally, so it was great to represent our comedy community, in a way,” said after receiving the award at the Sydney Comedy Festival closing night after-party.

“Canberra has national standard comedians doing sets here almost every week in our many performance rooms, I hope getting this award can draw attention to the local comedy scene a bit more and attract some new audiences,” she said.
