THE Australian War Memorial has this morning (May 17) unveiled its newest exhibition titled “D-Day: the Australian story”, which explores Australia’s involvement in the largest amphibious operation in military history.
On June 6, 1944 more than 6500 Allied ships and landing craft put to sea from ports along the length of the British south coast, supported by 12,000 aircraft. Thousands of Australians played a part in the liberation of Western Europe, a little-known until now.
“D-Day: the Australian story” will showcase a selection of items from the national collection, including: textiles, photographs, diaries, letters, models, artwork, and digital displays. It includes the story of Lieutenant Kenneth Hudspeth of the Australian Naval Volunteer Reserve, who was twice awarded the Distinguished Service Cross for commanding a midget submarine during the invasion.
