First sod turned in Whitlam

Housing and Suburban Development Minister Yvette Berry, centre, turns the first sod in Whitlam with former Prime Minister Gough Whitlam’s family.

THE family of former Australian Prime Minister Gough Whitlam was in the Molonglo Valley today (July 1) to help turn the first sod at Canberra’s newest suburb, Whitlam.

Construction of the suburb begins today, with the first land release planned for 2020 and it’s expected 600 homes will be built for the suburb by 2021, according to Housing and Suburban Development Minister Yvette Berry.

The intention to name the suburb in commemoration of Mr Whitlam’s legacy was first announced in 2015 by Chief Minister Andrew Barr and was made official in 2017.

Ms Berry says: “Gough Whitlam was a one-of-a-kind person and Prime Minister, who helped Australia re-think the way we approach ideas relating to inequality and social justice.”

“It is fitting he is being honoured in this way,” he says.

“The ACT government will look to develop further plans for Whitlam including a local public primary school and a local shopping centre, as well as establish a Whitlam Mingle program to help connect future residents.”
