Man critical after huge building site fall

A MAN in his early 20s is in hospital in a critical condition after he fell about 10 metres from scaffolding on a building site in Dickson this morning (September 6).

Emergency services were alerted to the accident on Challis Street at about 9.10am. Paramedics assessed the man before rushing him to hospital.

Work has stopped on the site and a non-disturbance notice is in place.

Work Safety commissioner Greg Jones says inspectors are likely to remain on the site late into the evening and return to the site tomorrow as investigations continue.

“Our focus is on understanding how this serious incident occurred as well as ensuring that workers on site, including those who may have witnessed the incident, are receiving support,” Mr Jones says.

“At this time our thoughts are with the injured worker, his family, friends and work colleagues.

“It was a significant incident and we will be working with all parties to understand how it occurred over the coming days and weeks. This will assist in the prevention of future incidents of a similar nature.

“A fall from a height is one of the most significant risks on a construction site and I’d like to remind all employers to ensure safe work practices are in place and are communicated to workers.  Workers should ensure they understand all relevant safe work practices and report any unsafe issues they may come across.”
