Musos jam against ACT sound laws

MusicACT threw a lunchtime concert called “Let Music Live” to protest against sound and planning laws.

GAREMA Place in Civic came alive today (June 21) for International Make Music Day when MusicACT threw a lunchtime concert called “Let Music Live” to protest against sound and planning laws.

David Caffery, the president of MusicACT, protests against sound and planning laws.

Top local musicians SAFIA, Hands Like Houses, Citizen Kay, Teen Jesus and the Jean Teasers, Young Monks and musos from MusicACT presented acts on the “SoulDefender”, the 14-tonne ex-army cargo truck recently converted into a roving urban artwork and music venue.

The protest has been mounted in the wake of news that developer Geocon has been approved to build a multi-storey hotel between Garema Place and Bunda Street,

MusicACT is arguing for new sound laws that will allow for hotspots that can protect music venues while letting people sleep at night, saying the laws governing sound, presently unenforced because no-one sleeps in Garema Place, will require amendment when it becomes a residential area.

“The sound laws have hit breaking point,” says MusicACT.

“We need entertainment precincts to stop grumps moving into the city and shutting down activity.”
