Police officer struck by drunk driver

A POLICE officer was hit last night (May 30) when a drunk driver drove through a roadblock.

Police had established the roadblock at the intersection of Lanyon Drive to divert traffic after a truck fire, which was on the southbound lanes of the Monaro Highway, adjacent to Hume.

Not long after, a 50-year-old man who was driving a white ute, ignored directions and drove through the roadblock, striking an officer at about 8.30pm.

The car was stopped by police and the man was arrested and his vehicle was seized.

He was subsequently charged with driving while having a disqualified licence, driving under the influence of alcohol (.150) and failing to stop when directed by police.

Police say the officer is not injured and the man appeared in the ACT Magistrates Court today (May 31).
