‘Troubling’ issue shuts down Belco building site

A LARGE building site in Belconnen was shut down on Friday (May 24) after Access Canberra found that work on the site had started without development or building approvals in place.

ACT Constructions occupations registrar Ben Green says it’s an unusual as well as troubling case that works had commenced with no relevant approvals granted.

“This case appears to demonstrate a significant breach as neither a development application nor building approval were in place,” he says.

“We will continue to investigate this matter to determine whether any offence has been committed. There will be no further works permitted until this matter is resolved.

“It is an offence for a person to undertake building work without a development approval, if that type of building work requires approval and the person knows of that requirement.”
