Author PANDUKA SENANAYAKE noticed a string of bus shelters being vandalised in Canberra’s south.
OVER the past three weeks, vandals have targeted bus shelters on Athllon Drive, between Greenway, and Tuggeranong and Hindmarsh Drive in Woden.
The first attacks are believed to have occurred during the last week of June when vandals destroyed several of the thick large glass panes used on four shelters at Greenway and Wanniassa. The shelters were situated on opposite sides of the road.
Since, travellers along the route have seen the progressive destruction carried out on other shelters along the road leading towards Mawson, with the shelter near Melrose High School being the most recent target.
A shelter near the Hindmarsh Drive intersection indicated signs of damage on a glass pane caused by, what looks like, a heavy pointed object.
A shelter on Launceston Street opposite the Phillip Oval was damaged too.
oOh!media Limited, an Australian outdoor advertising and media company responsible for the maintenance of the new bus shelters has informed the office of the Minister of City Services, Chris Steel, the replacement cost of each pane, which provides commuters some protection from the wind and rain, would be around $1000.
The police have been informed about the wanton acts of destruction, according to the office.
