THE “gold standard” for pain management involves weight loss, nutrition and exercise, says Arthritis ACT CEO Rebecca Davey, which is why the non-profit organisation offers services in each area.
From exercise classes to occupational therapy, Rebecca says Arthritis ACT can help Canberrans manage their chronic pain and improve their health and wellbeing.
“We also know that people who live with pain can also live with mental health issues such as depression and anxiety. They can carry the weight of the world on their shoulders,” she says.
“We can help people deal with the mental stress which can be just as painful as the physical pain they experience.”
Throughout National Pain Week, Arthritis ACT will hold live and recorded online sessions about various aspects of pain, and Rebecca encourages people to contact the office to get information on how to join them.
“We also run a peer mentoring program with peer mentors, also living with pain, supporting people who are new to chronic pain,” she says.
“We are offering our sessions online at present, which has been working well, [and include] a men’s support group.”
