Artsday / Celebrating good, bad and ugly Australian buildings

THE National Library galleries reopen to the public today, August 3, with an exhibition, “Australian Dreams: Picturing our Built World” showing how artists have documented, interpreted and celebrated a variety of buildings in Australia, whether the good, bad or the ugly. Exhibition Gallery, ground floor, 9am-5pm until January 31. Free, no bookings required but there is a limit of 75 visitors in the Exhibitions Gallery at any one time until further notice.

THE National Portrait Gallery is continuing its Tuesday online tours with stories of “humour, love, sadness and hope” as it explores portraits of our history, identity and the complexities of what it means to be Australian. Tuesday, August 4 at 12.30pm via Zoom. Free but bookings essential.

CTC@home continues from the stage of the Canberra Theatre, with Music at Midday livestreamed at noon tomorrow, Tuesday August 4. At 6pm on Wednesday, August 5, Girls Rock Canberra will perform, followed at 7.30pm by the Roll For Intelligence play “Secret Hitler”. Thursday, August 6 will be a special performance from Netflix star Liv Hewson at 7.30pm. The week winds up on Friday, August 7 with Music for Canberra staging a gig at 6pm and Chris Endrey’s “The World from Here” at 8pm. Accessible via Facebook.

Guitarist Rupert Boyd by the Hudson River

CANBERRA-raised classical guitarist Rupert Boyd has contacted us from New York City saying that although he’s 16,000km from home, right now it feels closer to a million. With that in mind he’s just recorded, from the banks of the Hudson River in Manhattan, “A Closed World of Fine Feelings” by Australian composer Graeme Koehne, accessible via Facebook.

GEOFF Page’s Poetry at Smiths will begin a new Zoom program from 7pm today, August 3, with former RN “Poetica” host Mike Ladd zooming in from Adelaide, as well as Anita Patel and Andrew McDonald. Limited bookings for live attendance at Smiths Alternative, 76 Alinga St Civic, or via Zoom.

Dance for Wellbeing.

“DANCE for Wellbeing: With Parkinson’s” resumes this week at Belconnen Arts Centre from 1.15pm to 2.30pm on Tuesdays. “Dance for Wellbeing: For Everyone” classes are from 12-1pm on Fridays and classes for people living with dementia will now be from 2-3pm on Fridays. Enrol here.

YOUNG organ virtuoso, Linus Lee, will be performing music on the Wesley Church organ which was originally composed by JS Bach, Joseph Haydn, Beethoven, Grieg and Lefébure-Wély for other instruments. THE ANU’s Centre for Classical Studies is hosting an online masterclass with Professor Louise Hitchcock from University of Melbourne on “Naue II Swords, Germs, and Iron: What COVID-19 Can Tell Us about the Bronze Age Collapse (12th century BCE) in Greece and Its Neighbours” which will also be open to the public. Wednesday, August 5 at 2pm, via Zoom.
