Artsday / Open studio shows fashion and jewellery

DESIGNER Alice Sutton and jeweller Phoebe Porter will be coming together for an open studio event as part of the 2020 DESIGN Canberra. Sutton’s label, Edition, has released a range of sustainable designer masks, while Porter has been offering private consultations at her Gorman Arts Centre studio. With an all-local team of photographer Lauren Sutton, hair and make-up artist Hayley Boyle and models Kate and Nicola Cooper, they’ve recently shot their latest collections in local settings that capture the “bush capital”. DESIGN Canberra will transform the CCAS gallery into its own “Third Place”, a place between home and work, to exchange ideas, have a good time and build relationships, an idea based on sociologist Ray Oldenburg’s work. The closing party will feature a lighting installation, live music, wholefood supper boxes, custom tonics and more. CCAS, Queen Elizabeth Terrace, Parkes, 6.30pm, Saturday, November 28. Book here.

“ETERNAL” is the third and final show in the 2020 “Darkfield Radio” trilogy of “Sinister Soundscapes”. Inspired by “?Dracula?”, it was commissioned by the Bram Stoker Festival in Dublin and is the sixth scary “Darkfield” experience to be produced in Australia. Unlike its predecessors, “Visitors” and “Double”, created for audiences to experience in pairs, “Eternal” can be experienced in bed by one person. All three shows are now available here.? “Double” runs at 8.30pm every Thursday, Friday and Saturday, “Eternal” at 9.30pm and “Visitors” at 9pm.

CANBERRA Qwire, proudly LGBTIQ+, is giving a free outdoor picnic-style concert, “Qwire in the Park” with the theme of “Nature” at the Rotunda, Glebe Park, from noon on Saturday, November 28. Audience/picnickers are requested to register in advance here and bring the tickets to check-in.

“THE Witness” is the ninth release by Canberra singer-songwriter Dorothy-Jane and her most important work yet, she believes, dealing with child abuse, family betrayal and marriage breakdown (the real-life events occurred in 2016) in a raw, bluesy style. “DJ” sings and Mike Dooley plays keyboard at Smith’s Alternative, Alinga St, Civic, 4pm and 5.30pm, November 29. CHAMBER choir I Progetti will perform “Miracles From Times of Plague”, a selection of works composed during pandemics, epidemics and highly contagious diseases that celebrate the beauty that can be created in, and despite, the darkest of times. Busking at Braddon.

NOT-for-profit community group, the Braddon Collective, will stage the grand finale of the 2020 Braddon Busking Festival this weekend. The festival has been running from November 19-26 to support local musicians and performers, who have been hit hard by the pandemic. CANBERRA Symphony Orchestra is premiering “Moon Saturn Jupiter” by Stuart Greenbaum, performed by Teresa Rabe, CSO principal flute as part of Australian Miniseries. It was written during Melbourne’s stage four lockdown, in response to the alignment of those celestial bodies. Available via YouTube and Facebook from 6.45pm AEDT, Friday, November 27.

THEA Katauskas’ installation of bird sculptures has grown out of an awareness of our changing environment in both North America and Australia.
