Bureau predicts possible flash flooding

THE Bureau of Meteorology is predicting strong winds and heavy rainfall that may lead to flash flooding in the ACT this weekend.

Ahead of these predictions, the ACT State Emergency Service (ACTSES) is urging the community to be prepared and to ensure all gutters are clear.

“For those with existing damage from previous storm events, please be sure to tarp any areas where water may leak through,” says an ACTSES spokesperson.

If there is flooding, ACTSES warns to never enter or drive through floodwaters, saying floodwaters can be several metres deep, can rise quickly and move fast.

There’s 100 per cent chance of showers on Saturday, according to the bureau, and a chance of a thunderstorm, which may become severe. Winds north to northwesterly will be 25 to 35 km/h and will shift south to southwesterly 15 to 20 km/h during the evening.

On Sunday there’s an 80 per cent chance of showers, with winds of 15 to 20 km/h turning southeasterly 20 to 30 km/h.
