Bosses urged to waive sick notes during crisis

CANBERRA’S trade union representative, UnionsACT, is calling on ACT employers to waive doctors certificates for employees during the coronavirus crisis.

“Our health system should not have resources wasted at this time by unnecessary visits to GPs or other services just because employers require a certificate for a day or two due to a normal illness,” says UnionsACT secretary Alex White.

Most employers require employees to provide a sick certificate from a doctor or pharmacist if they are sick for even a single day, but Mr White says during this public health emergency, this requirement will put undue strain on GPs and other health services.

“Employers must do the right thing and end requirements to provide sick certificates during the coronavirus crisis,” he says.
