Closed door talks of SPIRE’s uncertain future

DOCUMENTS from November 21 show that the ACT government still doesn’t have a plan for where it will put SPIRE, says shadow health minister Vicki Dunne.

Opposition health spokesperson Vicki Dunne.

The documents, which were obtained under freedom of information laws, said the government was considering “alternative approaches to the positioning of SPIRE”, which should be “kept to a tight group until a decision of the way forward has been reached”.

Mrs Dunne says the documents warned: “Be careful about who (if anyone) this is shared with.”

She says there were discussions on where to put the front entrance of the expansion but details of the preferred option remain redacted.

“While Health Minster Rachel Stephen-Smith is telling the community one thing, it’s a completely different story behind closed doors,” Mrs Dunne says.

This is the latest controversy in a series of SPIRE setbacks, and construction of the project won’t begin until after the 2020 election and likely won’t be operational until after the 2024 election, Mrs Dunne says.
