Cockington Green closes ‘indefinitely’

COCKINGTON Green Gardens closes indefinitely from today (March 23).

The decision was made in a response to the fast-changing coronavirus situation in Australia, according to the gardens director of operations, Mark Sarah, who says their primary consideration is the physical and emotional wellbeing of staff and the protection of visitors.

The rapid increase of infections both in the ACT and around Australia over the past few days has led to the decision to indefinitely close the attraction, says Mr Sarah.

“Whilst a predominantly outdoor display with plenty of space for visitors, the rising number of infections in recent days and concerns for our staff and visitors had to take precedent over attempts to continue to trade,” he says.

“We remain very hopeful that the coronavirus impacts will abate sooner rather than later and we will work behind the scenes to maintain the display and have it ready for reopening when people will be able to more safely get outdoors, get some sunshine, enjoy some entertainment and refresh.

“This is a hard decision to take after 40 years in business, but it is the right decision. Our reopening in the future will be guided by government and health authority advice but in the meantime our thoughts are with everyone who we implore to stay safe and offer support, kindness and consideration to each other in dealing with this crisis.”
