DEAD fish in Lake Ginninderra were found to be discarded catch, according to an ACT government spokesperson following the “surprise” discovery of dead carp by a Canberra local last night.
Fayyaz Mumtaz was surprised to see dead fish of big sizes and wondered if their deaths were due to dirty water or dangerous chemicals coming into the lake.
The ACT spokesperson solved the mystery of the dead fish, saying: “The reported deaths of invasive carp today in Lake Ginninderra were found to be discarded catch.”
“Previous recorded deaths of invasive carp were due to low dissolved oxygen levels after rain carried organic matter into local ponds. The native fish population in our larger urban lakes were not affected,” the spokesperson says.
