Driver strike keeps bins full for a second week

BINS in Canberra’s south will be left full for the second week in a row when workers walk off the job again on Monday (November 9).

Households in more than 40 suburbs will be affected due to ongoing pay negotiations between the Transport Workers’ Union and waste contractor Suez.

This second strike comes after bins in about 26 suburbs were left uncollected on Monday (November 2).

However, an ACT government city services spokeswoman says suburbs that miss having their red bin (waste) collected on a Monday, will instead have their waste collected on Tuesday.

She says these suburbs include Chapman, Chifley, Coombs, Curtin, Denman Prospect, Duffy, Farrer, Fisher, Greenway, Holder, Kambah, Rivett, Lyons, Mawson, Oxley, Pearce, Stirling, Uriarra Village, Torrens, Waramanga, Weston, Wright, and Yarralumla.

The news is worse for suburbs expecting a red bin waste pick-up on Tuesday, with the spokeswoman saying that service will be cut entirely for suburbs including Chisholm, Fadden, Garran, Gilmore, Gordon, Gowrie, Isaacs, Macarthur, Monash, O’Malley, Phillip and Wanniassa.

Other suburbs including Banks, Bonython, Calwell, Condor, Gordon, Isabella Plains, Richardson, Tharwa, and Theodore will not have red bins (waste) or yellow bins (recycling) collected.

Temporary rubbish only drop-off sites will be available from Saturday, November 7 until Sunday, November 15, for excess household waste but only three large plastic bags will be taken.

Rubbish can be dropped off between 9am and 6pm at Easty Street, between Smith Family carpark and Callum Offices in Woden, McGilvray Close, Gordon, Calwell Neighbourhood Oval off Outtrim Avenue, 66 Springbett Street, near the tennis courts at Kambah, 7 Finlay Place, Gowrie, near the Scout Hall, and Weston Neighbourhood Oval.

Larger waste bags can be disposed of at Mugga Lane Resource Management Centre in Symonston and the Mitchell Resource Management Centre between 7.30am and 5pm.

Recyclable materials can continue to be dropped off for free at the ACT government recycling drop off centres.
