Driver strike will leave bins full in Canberra’s south

TWENTY-three suburbs in Canberra’s south and inner-south won’t get bins picked up on Monday (November 2) when drivers walk off the job as part of ongoing pay negotiations.

Households in Chapman, Coombs, Curtin, Denman Prospect, Duffy, Fisher, Holder, Rivett, Stirling, Uriarra Village, Waramanga, Weston, Wright, and Yarralumla will miss Monday’s red bin (waste) pick-up.

While Chifley, Farrer, Greenway, Kambah, Lyons, Mawson, Oxley, Pearce, and Torrens will miss both waste and recycling pick-ups.

The disruption to services was foreshadowed by the Transport Workers’ Union, who notified the government that drivers will walk off the job on Monday as part of ongoing enterprise bargaining negotiations.

Excess household waste can be deposited at temporary drop-off sites in  Waramanga, at Walpiri Place, off Namatjiri Drive, 66 Springbett Street, Kambah, 7 Finlay Place, Gowrie, and at the Weston Neighbourhood Oval, between 9am and 6pm.

A Transport Canberra and City Services spokesperson says the drop-off sites will only accept three large plastic bags of waste.

Recyclable materials can continue to be dropped off for free at the ACT government recycling drop off centres, open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, the spokesperson says.

About the unemptied bins… what sign?

Typical that only suburbs in the south have been targeted by this ‘industrial action’ – not the precious inner north. Also suspicious that the ‘industrial action’ is being undertaken post the election and on a Monday. A sign of what life will be like in the ACT for the next four long years.

This is what the people of Canberra voted for. I’m sure they know what they are doing. You would think the union would have had a better chance of getting what they wanted if they had threatened action before the election. I’m sure they know what they are doing. In terms of better services, I’m sure we are better off sticking with Labor and the Greens. (By the way, have you noticed that whenever people say “I’m sure” it means they are not sure.)
