Drunk driver crashes in oval carpark

A DRUNK man was attempting to reverse out of the Wanniassa Oval carpark when he crashed into a parked vehicle last night (September 24).

The man, a 52-year-old from Monash, was more than four times over the legal alcohol limit when he collided into the car at about 8.20pm.

He was stopped by members of the public who contacted police. When taken into custody he undertook a breath test where he recorded a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of 0.224, which is four and a half times the legal limit.

Detective inspector of road policing Marcus Boorman said drivers needed to plan ahead and organise a safe ride home if they were going to consume alcohol.

“You don’t even have to be on the road to see the immediate consequences of drink driving,” he said.

“Fortunately in this instance no one was injured but it is not hard to imagine the horrific consequences if this collision had happened on the road at full speed.

“Our message could not be clearer – if you are going to consume alcohol just don’t take the risk, don’t drive.”

The man’s license was suspended and will appear before the ACT Magistrates Court.
