Fatal crash has cops urging drivers to slow down

POLICE have delivered tragic news to six families who have lost loved ones in road crashes this year, and are now urging Canberrans to slow down.

The warning comes a day after a teenage girl died following a single vehicle crash over the weekend.

“Police still see far too many drivers on our roads not only speeding, but speeding to excess. This behaviour is dangerous, reckless, and completely indefensible,” says ACT officer in charge of road policing, Detective Inspector Marcus Boorman

Police will not tolerate this behaviour and neither should the Canberra community, according to Mr Boorman, who is now urging motorists to consider: “Who are you rushing to meet?”

“If you speed, if you drive under the influence of drugs or alcohol you could be arriving at a very different destination than you initially anticipated,” he says.

“Police have to examine horrific crash sites, fire fighters have to cut people out of mangled vehicle wrecks, ambulance officers have to treat injuries at the scene, as surgeons have to treat them in hospital.

“And if the worst case scenario does happen, funeral directors are then called in to deal with dead bodies following collisions.”

Detective Inspector Boorman’s warning comes ahead of a month-long police blitz for November which will focus on alcohol or drug impaired driving, speeding, not wearing a seatbelt, intersections and driving whilst distracted.

“Driving at excessive speed is a death wish. When you speed, you show a complete disregard for not only your own life, but the lives of other road users,” he said.

If we had unmarked Police cars, they would see the idiots that we all see every day. Why do the Police want a quiet life?
