STORM activity could contribute to changing or worsening conditions in the Orroral Valley Fire, which remains at a “watch and act” level.
The Bureau of Meteorology is forecasting a 50 per cent chance of rain until 5 this afternoon (February 2) and the chance of a thunderstorm, possibly severe with gusty winds.
The fire – at more than 55,000 hectares – has consumed 23 per cent of the ACT’s land mass. It is sitting more than one kilometre from Tharwa and six kilometres from the southern Canberra suburb of Banks.
The fire fighting effort has been concentrated on building a 50-metre fuel break on grassland near Tharwa and it’s there, as the fire emerges from Mount Tennent, that an attack will be made.
While fire activity has eased across the fireground, the ESA has warned about falling trees.
