Firefighters ready to face blaze on grasslands near Tharwa

THE Orroral Valley Fire rating has been downgraded again to “watch and act” level with the ESA saying fire activity has eased.

Despite this, the ACT Emergency Controller Georgeina Whelan late this afternoon confirmed that the fire was two kilometres from Tharwa and seven from the southern Canberra suburb of Banks.

She told a media briefing that the ESA had established containment and retardant lines before Tharwa and Banks and had four or five fall-back strategy plans in place.

She said ground and aerial crews were waiting for the fire to emerge from the steep, inaccessible slopes of Mount Tennant to confront it on the grasslands before Tharwa.

The latest ESA update says the out-of-control fire is travelling in a south easterly direction and it’s size is now nearly 45,000 hectares.
