Flood risks rise, get ready now

WITH the Bureau of Meteorology forecasting drier days over the coming week before the return of wet weather, Canberrans are being urged to use the time to repair existing damage and ensure they are storm and flood ready.

Above-average rainfall is increasing the risk of flash flooding and the ACT Emergency Services Agency is urging anyone living in a flood-prone area to learn how to keep safe during a flood.

The community is encouraged to visit the ACTMapi website and search for their address to check if they are at risk of flooding.

Emergency Services commissioner Georgeina Whelan says the La Nina weather pattern will see a higher risk of storm and flood during the bushfire season.

“With a La Nina event well and truly in force, it is important residents take the time now to prepare their homes and properties for all types of hazards,” she said.

“We’re reminding the community to keep clear of storm water drains and rising waterways as they pose a significant threat to life during a flood, remember – if it’s flooded forget it. Please speak to your children and loves ones about how dangerous these places can be.”
