Footy’s back from July, but tickets will be ‘scarce’

FROM early July, up to 2000 footy fans will be able to attend live Raiders and Brumbies games as part of a pilot project.

In partnership with Canberra Stadium, the NRL, Super Rugby and ACT Health, the ACT chief health officer Dr Kerryn Coleman approved the pilot project, which could see between 1000 to 2000 fans attend the Brumbies home game on July 3, and, depending on NRL-approval, a Raiders game on July 4.

ACT Chief Minister Andrew Barr says: “The chief health officer has been working closely with Canberra Stadium officials, with the Raiders and Brumbies on how that will look and we’re hoping for at least 1000 people will be able to attend those games in early July as a pilot as we move to have an increased number of spectators attend games.”

“There’s obviously a specific protocol that will be required in relation to Canberra Stadium about meeting both the NRL and Super Rugby protocol requirements around keeping the players and officials associated with the teams very separate from the spectators but we think we can manage that at Canberra Stadium,” he says.

Who will get access to the “scarce” amount of tickets is up to the Raiders and the Brumbies.

“They’re focused, of course, on rewarding their members and their season ticket-holders,” Mr Barr says.

“For those initial games, the tickets are going to be scarce and they will be highly sought-after but if the pilot goes well, then of course there will be more spectators who will be able to attend Canberra Stadium.”

If those games are successful, Mr Barr says the capacity for games in late July, early August, could see a 25 per cent capacity at Canberra Stadium.

“[That] would allow us to move up towards 6000, 6500 spectators in the coming rounds but we’ll start with the 1000 as the pilot and then move beyond that,” he says.
