THE ACT Greens will ensure renters have the right to grow food in backyards and balconies and will mandate space for community gardens in all new suburbs, if they help form government on Saturday (October 17).
The party also pledges to protect rural farmland, support more community neighbourhood orchards, and establish a Canberra region food collaboration with local food and tourism industries.
So far, the party has costed three of these pledges, saying $1.5 million will go to establishing a community food fund, $1.5 million will be invested in a Canberra region food collaborative and $500,000 will go towards establishing a fund to support residents to replace grass lawns with food gardens.
