Gun shots fire through car in Coombs

BULLETS tore through the side of a car in Coombs early this morning (October 9) in what police believe was a targeted shooting.

Officers responded to reports of the sound of gun shots on Fairhall Street at about 2.50am. Following the gun shots residents reported seeing a car speeding off eastbound on John Gorton Drive.

Police say no one was hurt during the incident but residents were home at the time. They do not believe criminal gangs were involved.

Detective acting superintendent Mark Steel says AFP Forensic Services attended the crime scene to examine the area and located three shotgun casings at the scene.

“ACT Policing recovered three spent shotgun casings at the crime scene which are being forensically examined,” he says.

“ACT Policing remains focused on keeping our community safe, and it’s important to recognise this was a targeted attack rather than a random incident. Our detectives are making a number of enquiries.”

ACT Policing’s examination of the ammunition has determined the weapon used is not the same as firearms issued to AFP officers.

Police urge anyone who saw suspicious activity in Coombs early this morning, or who may have information or CCTV that could assist police, to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333000, or via the Crime Stoppers ACT website quoting reference number 6643466.
